This year’s conference theme is NATURE AND NARRATIVE. We encourage submissions that explore the nature of narrative: the ways in which filmmakers use storytelling to illuminate human nature, the natural world, and the intricate relationships between the two. Film has long used narrative as a means of understanding both ourselves and our environments. Yet dissenting voices argue that life is not a story, that by applying the rules of storytelling to the natural world, we perpetuate false ideals about standards of human behavior, or we reduce the complexity of nature to simplistic oppositions between "right and wrong” or "good and evil.” Does narrative help us to understand nature? Or does it instead construct nature in ways we find convenient or easy? What is the role and responsibility of the filmmaker in this process?
(Please note that submissions can address the conference theme, but are not required to do so. All submissions will be considered.)
