In the Spotlight today is the 26th AnnualHamptons International Film Festival(HIFF), a prestigious, Academy-qualifying showcase that attracts a passionate and influential audience that continues to grow each year. Named one ofMovieMaker Magazine’s“25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World,” leading press outlets flock to HIFF for the opportunity to discover fresh new voices and films that offer enlightening global perspectives.Varietyasserts HIFF is, "One of America's most glamorous displays of the best in cutting-edge cinema."

Films in the 2017 Festival received a record 47 Academy Award nominations including five Best Picture nominations. Additionally, films that screened at the Festival last year won in all major categories at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted & Original Screenplays, Foreign Language, and Documentary Film. For the past eight years the Festival has screened the eventual Best Picture Academy Award winner. In a recent article about HIFF,Varietynoted "The Festival has grown a reputation for being the place to see emerging talent before they become marquee names." Overall, films from the last 11 editions of HIFF have received 369 total Oscar nominations.

As part of the festival’s commitment to independent voices, HIFF awards multiple cash prizes ranging from $500 to $5,000 USD, and prizes of in-kind goods and services valued at more than $180,000. Narrative and Documentary Short Film Jury Prize winners will qualify for Academy Award consideration. Additionally, many films over the years have made their world premieres at HIFF and been picked up for distribution shortly after their screenings. The best known of these isOpen Waterwhich was bought by Lionsgate and went on to gross $40 million worldwide.

HIFF provides filmmakers with an all-encompassing fest experience - invited filmmakers receive complimentary passes with access to festival screenings, industry mixers, panels, the opening night party, the filmmaker party, among other events throughout the five day extravaganza. Most filmmakers in competition also receive complimentary travel and accommodations in East Hampton.
