​The MDOCS Storytellers' Institute Festival/Symposium Call for Applicants

The MDOCS Storytellers' Institute invites documentary practitioners, scholars, media activists and surveillance studies scholars to apply to the following two summer opportunities: 


1) The MDOCS Storytellers' Institute- 

A five-week residency in June bringing together professional documentary practitioners and Skidmore College students and faculty members to work on personal projects, receive and give critiques, and engage with the year’s theme, Surveil/Surveilled. Documentary makers working in all mediums –– sound, film, video, word, performance, installation, etc –– are invited to apply. 

Fellowship includes: a $2500 honorarium, travel stipend, a public exhibition, room and board, workspace, and access to Skidmore facilities

2) The MDOCS Storytellers' Institute Festival/Symposium-  

Each June, Skidmore College hosts a weekend-long Documentary Festival/Symposium- public presentations of artistic work and deep-dive conversations around an annual theme. 

In our 3rd year, we welcome submissions that explore the theme Surveil/Surveilled in the following forms: 

  • creative presentations of documentary work in all mediums (films screenings, artists talks, audio listening sessions, interactive experiences, photography, performances, etc); 
  • pre-constituted panels/conversations; 
  • skill building workshops; 
  • individual papers (to be arranged into panels by the organizers). 

Important Dates for Festival/Symposium 

Deadline: submissions due by December 15th 2017 

Notification of acceptance by: February 2018 

Festival/Symposium Dates: June 7th– 10th 2018 

Festival location: Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.  Saratoga Springs is under 200 miles from Boston, MA; Montreal, CA, and New York, NY, and may be reached by car, bus, rail, and at the Albany, NY airport (approximately 30 miles). 

Cost of Festival Symposium 

There is no registration fee for the Festival/Symposium. A limited number of travel/board scholarships are available. Funds will prioritize organizations and individuals without institutional support for participation in conferences. Meals will be provided for festival participants.
