Seattle, Washington - USA
May 17 to June 10, 2018

In the Spotlight today is the 44th Annual Seattle International Film Festival(SIFF), highlighting more than 400 independent films from over 80 countries to a fiercely engaged and unique crowd of cinema fans. It's no wonder SIFF is one of the largest and most attended festivals on the circuit with more than 140,000 attendees in 2017. For years, SIFF audiences have proven themselves adept at predicting a film's strength.

SIFF is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a Qualifying Festival in all short film categories. The Festival has significant sections devoted to documentaries, world cinema, American cinema, along with all other genres including animation, experimental, and late-night, with more than 70 percent of the films made by first- and second-time filmmakers, and films without U.S. distribution.

SIFF proudly offers an impressive array of forums, discussions, and parties, as well as a stellar ShortsFest that packs more than 125 short films into a single weekend. There are plenty of incentives for success including $5,000 USD cash awards for Official Competition, New Directors Competition, New American Cinema Competition, Ibero-American Competition, Documentary Competition, and $2,500 cash awards for each short film category. SIFF also hosts a Screenplay Competition which helps support and discover emerging storytellers. The SIFF Screenplay Competition puts the writer, and their career, first by focusing on connecting strong scripts with independent directors and producers, all of whom are successful alumni of the SIFF Catalyst Film Program. Additionally, in 2017, SIFF launched the inaugural New Works-In-Progress Forum to bring emerging narrative and documentary filmmakers together with industry and audience at a critical junction in the creative process.

SIFF boasts a slew of prominent alumni - including Anjelica Huston, Sam Elliott, Viggo Mortensen, Michel Hazanavicius, Kevin Bacon, Jason Schwartzman, Richard Linklater, Quincy Jones, Laura Dern, Jessica Chastain, Edward Norton, Ang Lee, Spike Lee, Jennifer Lawrence and Mark Duplass - who have each benefited from and contributed to the festival's durable reputation and impressive visibility. Past SIFF selections that subsequently soared to mainstream success includeThe Big Sick,The Little Hours,Lane 1974,Captain Fantastic,Kedi,Short Term 12,Dear White People,The Hurt Locker, andWinter's Bone.

SIFF aims to create experiences that bring people together to discover extraordinary films from around the world. It is through the art of cinema that we foster a community that is more informed, aware, and alive.

SIFF is proud to be a festival deeply integrated within and among the community it serves and celebrates. SIFF visitors are encouraged to take full advantage of Seattle's rich artistic offerings. AsVarietyattests, "Few film fests are as integral to their home communities as Seattle. SIFF has become... one of America's most important city festivals, and locals can't get enough of this event's nearly entire month of edgy, smart film programming."
