In the Spotlight today is the 20th Annual Sarasota Film Festival(SFF). Named byMovieMaker Magazineas one of the "Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World" in 2016, SFF invites filmmakers of all genres to embark on a journey of cinema excellence in the Gulf Coast. Hailed byVariety,IndieWire,New York Magazine,The New York Daily News, and others as one of America's essential regional festivals, the SFF is warmed by bright Florida sunlight and extraordinary hospitality, attracting audiences and press from around the world.

SFF prides itself on discovery, having showcased emerging filmmakers like Lena Dunham, Alex Ross Perry, Aaron Katz, Amy Seimetz, Andrew Bujalski, and Joe Swanberg early in their careers. Each year SFF presents retrospectives and honors luminaries in the field with various awards. Past honorees have included Diane Lane, Rosanna Arquette, Jane Seymour, Rachel Weisz, Blythe Danner, Rory Kennedy, Jason Momoa, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth Moss, and more. SFF patrons have also enjoyed intimate performances from Aerosmith and The B52's as well as a host of special appearances from local and international musicians.

SFF honors its most compelling films in a wide range of competitive categories, including Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Short, and Independent Visions. Award recipients are selected by audience vote or by a jury of film professionals, depending on category. The festival also includes a Young Filmmakers Showcase (for students ages 18 and under) and a category exclusively for Florida filmmakers.

SFF's mission is to celebrate the art of filmmaking and the contribution of filmmakers by hosting an international film festival and developing year-long programs for the economic, educational and cultural benefit of our community.

Student filmmakers (18 and under) from around the world are invited to submit to the Young Filmmakers Showcase. Additionally, current NYU students are invited to submit and submission fees are waived with a valid student ID.
