Discover Film Awards Call for Entries

In the Spotlight today is the 4th Discover Film Awards(, a fast growing short film showcase. The event offers public cinema screenings at the art deco Phoenix Cinema, the oldest cinema in the UK (built in 1910) whose patrons include Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, Michael Palin and Mark Kermode. Awards will be presented across more than a dozen Best of categories and filmmakers will have the opportunity to earn production and media services valued up to $10,000 USD. alum James Mansell shares, "Fantastic festival! Discussed my film and other films with fans and filmmakers throughout the night and into the awards, which consisted of great food, drink and a very fun evening! Highly recommended to get involved with these guys." Spread over four days, the Festival brings together members of the global film community (investors, film makers, distributors, bloggers and journalists along with cinema fans) to discover the best new short films. The event's industry credibility stems from the head of programming and chair of judges, Jaine Green who has produced and directed over 50 commercially successful films and documentaries and is Series Producer for a number of large global TV formats run by the likes of Channel 4, National Geographic and Zodiak Media.

Winners have the option to pitch to potential investors and distributors. Additionally, filmmakers can use this opportunity to get help with future film projects in the form of discounted rates from's partner firms such as production houses and mentoring from senior commercial film and business executives. While at the event filmmakers can leverage publicity across a wide range of media including print and social to garner attention beyond the event's attending audience.

MISSION AND OBJECTIVE is changing the way that people think of short films. The event is looking for the very best short films that are entertaining and tell a story. The sort of short films that people want to watch. That make them laugh. Or cry. That shock and surprise.

Awards include Best Actor, Best Animation, Best Alternative, Best Crossover, Best Cinematography, Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Horror, Best Narrative, Best Sci-Fi, Best Director, Audience Award, Judges Award and Best in Festival. Additionally, winners and short listed films will also have the opportunity to participate in the UK cinema distribution programme.
