In the Spotlight today is the 24th AnnualAustin Film Festival(AFF), known far and wide as "The Writer's Festival" and as a champion for great storytelling on the screen and on the page. In addition to over a dozen parties and over 150 film premieres, AFF hosts the world's largest Screenwriters Conference open to all accepted filmmakers with panels, workshops, roundtables, and conversations featuring over 150 working film, television, and new media industry professionals. AFF is also proud to pave the way to Oscar gold for short films - the Festival is an Academy-qualifier for narrative, documentary and animated short films.

"I can honestly say, even as a fundamentally introverted guy, I made many great new contacts and, more importantly, made some great, new, actual friends. Thanks for taking a chance on a first time filmmaker. I'm leaving Austin so inspired as a filmmaker," Jonathan Todd Ross, writer/director of 2016 short filmThe Universe of Scotch and Haagen-Dazs. Austin Film Festival has proven to be a valuable launching pad for many emerging filmmakers. One Night,Finding Oscar, andAlmost Adults, all films from the 2016 Festival, are just a few of the features that signed distribution deals since last October. In 2000, Jason Reitman won the Jury Award for his short film In God We Trust and later won AFF Audience Awards forJuno(2007) andUp in the Air(2009). In 2003 and 2005, Cary Fukunaga received AFF awards for his student short films, and has since gone on to direct the first season of the HBO dramaTrue Detectiveas well as the critically acclaimed Netflix featureBeasts of No Nation.

Agents, managers, television showrunners, studio execs, distributors, and filmmakers visit AFF again and again, not only to sample its unbeatable hospitality and great barbecue, but also to uncover and promote talents that deserve to be seen and heard. Along with excellent exposure comes the opportunity to take home a cash prize of up to $2,500 USD, travel and hotel reimbursement of up to $1,000, and AFF's famous bronze typewriter statue for winning filmmakers.
