Sarasota, Florida - USA
March 31 to April 9, 2017

In the Spotlight today is the 19th Annual Sarasota Film Festival (SFF), inviting filmmakers of all genres to embark on a journey of cinema excellence in the Gulf Coast and to create exciting memories that will last a lifetime. Hailed by Variety, Indiewire, New York Magazine, The New York Daily News, and others as one of America's essential regional festivals, the SFF is warmed by bright Florida sunlight and extraordinary hospitality, attracting audiences and press from around the world.

SFF prides itself on discovery, having showcased emerging filmmakers like Lena Dunham, Alex Ross Perry, Aaron Katz, Amy Seimetz, Andrew Bujalski, and Joe Swanberg early in their careers. In 2016, the festival presented the SFF Legend Award to Sophia Loren and introduced the annual Pennebaker-Hegedus Award for Excellence in Documentary Film. Notable films screened included D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus' Unlocking The Cage, Robert Greene's Kate Plays Christine, Whit Stillman's Love and Friendship, And Joachim Trier's Louder Than Bombs.

SFF honors its most compelling films in a wide range of competitive categories, including Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Short, and Independent Visions. Award recipients are selected by audience vote or by a jury of film professionals, depending on category. The festival also includes a Young Filmmakers Showcase (for students ages 18 and under) and a category exclusively for Florida filmmakers.
