EW HOTEL OPTION: SEE LODGING SECTION BELOW.

As 2009 conference host, I am pleased to invite you to the 63rd annual conference of the University Film and Video Association at The University of New Orleans. New Orleans is a city known for its hospitality, and we hope to uphold that tradition with a lively, productive conference.

The conference is Tuesday, Aug. 4th through Saturday, August 8th, beginning with an opening evening reception Tuesday and closing with the banquet Saturday night. The conference will be held at UNO’s Lakefront campus, which is across town from most of New Orleans’s landmarks, on the shores of scenic Lake Pontchartrain. The annual Thursday night picnic will be held at Mardi Gras World amidst the sumptuous floats. Saturday night’s banquet will be at the beautiful Audubon Tea Room, a five star location on a bayou in Audubon Park.

Most of our panels and screenings will take place in our Performing Arts Center which includes two newly refurbished theatres for screenings and a 24 seat computer lab for software demonstrations. The opening receptions and presentations will be in UNO’s new state of the art business building.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Picnic: The traditional Thursday night picnic will be held at Mardi Gras World. If you haven’t had the chance to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans, this is your opportunity. Blain Kern’s Mardi Gras World creates most of the floats that parade in the Mardi Gras ‘krewes’ and the UFVA picnic will be held amongst the floats. Complete with Cajun and Creole food and a New Orleans jazz band, this will be an event to remember. Come prepared to catch beads and have fun. A ticket to the picnic is included with each registration. Additional tickets for guests and families who will not otherwise be attending the conference can be purchased when you register for $50.

Membership Meeting: The annual membership meeting will be held Thursday afternoon. This is the one time each year when the membership meets in a formal session, with the board of directors, to discuss and vote on issues of concern to the organization. No other events will be scheduled during this time.

Basketball: The basketball game will be Thursday morning at the Human Performance Center on campus. This event is $15.00.

Golf: The annual UFVA golf tournament is Friday morning. Scheduled at beautiful Stone Bridge golf course, the winning foursome will receive the coveted trophy at a special presentation at the banquet Saturday night. The $55 registration fee includes green fees and golf cart. Please contact Aaron Rushin for more information, 504-280-7212, ajrushin@uno.edu.

Banquet: The Saturday evening banquet is a dress-up affair and is the final event of the conference. It will take place at the Audubon Tea Room, a beautiful location in Audubon Park hidden amongst giant live oak trees. There will be live New Orleans jazz music and time for members to enjoy each other’s company, along with the traditional after-dinner ceremonies and award presentations. The $55 ticket includes an open bar, the meal with wine service and transportation from the campus. Additional tickets for guests and families who will not otherwise be attending the conference can be purchased when you register.

Lodging will be great this year. If you plan to stay on campus it couldn’t be more convenient. Our brand new dormitories are across the street from the main conference building. Built just last year, all rooms are fully furnished with complete linens and ready internet access. Doubles will be given on a first come, first serve basis. After that four bedroom suites will be available. Be sure to note a preferred roommate on the registration form. Five nights lodging (check-in Tuesday through Sunday check-out) plus a four day meal package of lunch and breakfast (Wednesday-Saturday) is $260.00. FINAL DEADLINE FOR CAMPUS HOUSING IS JUNE 1. BE SURE TO REGISTER FOR HOUSING ON CAMPUS BY THEN.

If you prefer to stay off campus there are many options, but we have negotiated a fantastic deal with the Ritz Carlton Hotel for $99/night. Located on Canal St. in the French Quarter, the Ritz is a ten minute drive to campus. After a multi-million dollar renovation the Ritz looks amazing. It is a hotel to be seen, even for just a day visit. To make reservations call 1-800-826-8987 and reference: UNO-University Film and Video Association. You can also make on-line reservations . Be sure to use the group code: aawaawa, to get the UFVA rate.

Louis Armstrong International Airport (airport code MSY) services all major carriers, and is about 8 miles west of town. Baton Rouge also has an airport, though it’s about 80 miles farther west. A cab ride to downtown or campus will be about $30.
